CVC Services Building

Conserving Washroom Access

Addressing context while providing an aesthetically pleasing and fully accessible public washroom

Description:

The project was to provide permanent visitor amenities and staff space to compliment the existing site and operation. The site is challenging as it has multiple regulations and setbacks from government agencies, and most of the area is within the floodplain, with very limited area for the new building. Additionally, parking is at a premium and was not to be altered, as the conservation authority was already experiencing high traffic volumes at this location.

The  four season building that contains single occupant washrooms, including universal and barrier-free washrooms, a sheltered rest area with water fountain and staff room. It incorporates wet floodproofing of the structure and its mechanical and electrical systems, and design of a tertiary septic treatment system within tight site constraints. The plumbing systems and lighting are designed for vandal-resistance, as well as to balance energy efficiency with robustness of operating and control features, to minimize maintenance cost. Siteworks included providing accessible parking, a rain garden for storm water management, and decorative screens to camouflage the existing shipping container / ticket booth.
