John MacDonald Architect is interested in hiring two architecture students to join our team in Kitchener beginning in January. Undergraduate and graduate students seeking 4 month co-op placements are encouraged to apply.
Our forward-thinking studio of twelve or so is presently working on a wide range of exciting projects including adaptive re-use of heritage properties, mixed use and multi-res developments, institutional and emergency services projects, and public spaces, as well as custom residential projects.
We offer exposure to all phases of project development, with mentorship from the firm's principal and senior level staff. Student interns work on a variety of projects throughout the term and so gain valuable exposure to different project types.
The successful applicant will work in person at our open, light-filled downtown Kitchener studio. Remuneration will be commensurate with experience to date. We pay on an hourly basis, including for all overtime hours.
Experience, Motivation, and Skills that lead to success:
- a keen interest in learning and development of skills for how buildings are constructed and function;
- motivation to be organized, efficient, and increasingly competent;
- a good spatial sense, and willingness to see inspiring architecture as the performance of building systems in support of user comfort, experience and well-being;
- excellent understanding of CAD and modelling software principles (2D and 3D) working within a Mac-based environment (proficiency with Vectorworks is considered an asset); and
- ability to gracefully contribute to the enrichment of our office and team culture.
Preference is for an upper year student with previous work experience in the architecture and design industry.
Responsibilities
You will assist our teams in all stages of projects from initial concept to completion including:
- Participating in early Pre-Design planning and information gathering;
- Contribution to design sessions and evaluation of design options;
- Producing design documentation including renderings, diagrams, and material for design reports and presentations;
- Assisting with the preparation of technical permit and tender documentation; and
- Assisting with the preparation of documentation during the Contract Administration phase.
Interested applicants are encouraged to apply through the UW portal with a cover letter detailing your interest in working within our firm’s culture, your CV, and samples of your portfolio, all in PDF format. Please copy Scott Clark at [email protected] with your submission if through portal. Please submit your application no later than 9 am on Friday, November 21st.
