COVID-19 Provincial Emergency Order Shelters
Adaptive Reuse in an Emergency
Temporary shelters for people experiencing homelessness
Description:
Under the auspices of the COVID-19 provincial emergency order, three different buildings, a community centre, a church and a hotel, were adapted in succession as temporary shelters for people experiencing homelessness.
Our Role:
Production of contract documentation, construction site reviews. The architectural work involved adapting the buildings to ensure life safety and fire safety, meet code requirements for occupancy and adapting the facilities for COVID-19 guidelines, including accommodating for isolation beds.
Achievements:
JMA is proud of its contribution to ameliorate the conditions of people experiencing homelessness in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were able to start work with no time notice, and meet the tight timelines required by the Emergency Order, and adapt quickly to the evolving guidelines from Public Health.
