We are happy to announce that the winner of the last month's JMA Architectural Scavenger Hunt is..... Dave Pawelko, who was the first to identify the March clue: the Nyle Ludolph Materials Recycling Center at 925 Erb Street West in Waterloo.

A bit about the Waterloo Region Materials Recycling Centre:

The building expansion was needed to handle the increased volume of material being collected through the blue box program. The bright blue boxy building visible from afar is a fun reminder of the local origins of this program that Nyle Ludolph, our local recycling champion, pioneered in the 70’s & 80’s.

The list of “must haves” for the renovation & expansion was complex, in that there were different streams of activity that couldn’t get in each other’s way. Recycling trucks and personal & staff vehicle circulation had to be kept apart. Visitors that came for educational tours received a whole system of walkways, crosswalks, and caged bridges that allowed them to circulate safely while staff could continue to work uninterrupted below.

The final result was improved safety and efficiencies in the operations of the recycling plant, plus a raised profile of the recycling program in Waterloo Region.

There has been some curiosity over the poles mounted on the exterior walls and the wires strung over the roof. This is simply a humane system to deter birds from landing on the roof, a much-needed measure on this site, where birds abound.

And now, the 8th clue of the JMA Architectural Scavenger Hunt:

The first to respond correctly identifying the building wins a bag of coffee beans (or loose leaf tea, if you prefer) from Matter of Taste, or a gift card from Four All Ice Cream. Your choice! You'll just have to drop by our office to pick up your prize and say hi.

If you can identify the building, please tell us what the building is (for example “the fire/EMS station”) and the location (for example, “in Breslau visible from the road to Guelph after the turnoff for the Breslau bypass” or “51 Beacon Point Ct, Breslau”)

Send your responses to [email protected] with Scavenger Hunt on the subject line. The winner will be announced the following month, along with the new clue.

The small print:

If you worked on, or in, the building, or if you are related to anyone who worked on or in, you can’t win. The first one to respond by email with the correct answer, wins. No one can win more than once. If you cause us to have to make more small print, you can’t win either.

You can also follow us on Instagram, or check this blog, where we will also be posting the same scavenger hunt clues.

The next scavenger hunt clue will be posted on May 11, and subsequently on the 11th of every month, ending on August 11, 2025.
