Our staff are looking forward to participating again in Jane's Walk, the annual community-based approach to city building that uses volunteer-led walking tours to encourage people to rediscover the value of walking, and to observe, reflect, share, question and re-imagine the places in which they live, work and play. This year, both John and Scott have Jane's Walks planned for the first full weekend of May (3-5). Scott's walk will be announced shortly.

How Do you Do? The Happy Accident of Meeting a Stranger, with John

An interactive session that uses our city as a backdrop for an important conversation.

What are the spaces / places in our community that help us meet people who aren’t like ourselves? How do our actions in public affect our ability to connect with strangers in a positive way? Why would we want to?

What are the forces that isolate us, and what action can we take to counter these forces? What should we demand of community leadership to help create opportunities for citizens to bridge the gaps and forge meaningful connections among citizens of diverse age, ability, background and circumstance?

There are lots and lots of questions that we can explore together, using some of the spaces in Downtown Kitchener as a guide for discussion. If nothing else, this will be a safe opportunity to meet someone that is not like yourself, and to enjoy the benefits that flow from that.

Walk Start and End Location: Heritage Clock Tower, Victoria Park, Kitchener

Date and Time: Sunday, May 5th, 1-3 pm

A Tale of Two Parks: Countryside Park, McLennan Park and the Evolution of Public Green Spaces

Take a stroll with Scott on an approximately 2.5 km, point-to-point walk from Countryside Park to McLennan Park, finishing at the landmark lookout. Along the way, we’ll discuss what features make for a good park, as well as how our values and ideas of public spaces have evolved over the years.

Hiking shoes or boots are recommended, as the route will include a brief meander through the woods.

Walk Start Location: Countryside Park (centre junction / tree cluster)
Walk End Location: McLennan Park (lookout)
Date and Time: Friday, May 3rd at 7 pm
